Sligo Jazz Project - International Summer School
19 - 24 July 2011
Sligo, Ireland

Faculty
We are very excited that SJP’s 2011 faculty includes the renowned drum educator and Vanguard Jazz Orchestra drummer, John Riley. John’s CV reads like a who’s who of jazz – he is, simply, one of the most respected jazz musicians alive.

2011 also sees the first visit of US trombone virtuoso Marshall Gilkes, UK piano legend john Taylor, top UK vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, Swedish virtuoso guitarist Andreas Oberg and many more. Last years superb drum tutor Paul Clarvis moves to jazz percussion and we have a strong Northern Ireland representation in Linley Hamilton, trumpet, Dr. David Lyttle and Stephen Davis on drums.

David is well known to Sligo jazz audiences and will lead an ensemble of young gifted musicians through their paces during the week, including our young friend Andreas Varady, who performed his very first concert at Ronnie Scott’s the other night and appears on the April cover of Guitar Player magazine.

A limited number of international SJP bursaries are available for young gifted musicians under 18 years old. Contact me for more info.

Dublin based pianist Phil Ware joins the faculty for the first time, joining John Taylor, while Alec Dankworth, from one of the UK’s jazz dynasties, takes up double bass tutorship.

The ever-present Mike Nielsen will be back, plus Michael Manring, that solo electric bass magician from California, returns to Sligo for his second year running, as does Matthew Halpin who joins former Art Blakey sideman Jean Toussaint on saxophone. And since I’m helplessly name-dropping I might as well point out that members of the 2011 faculty have performed with Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Ricky Martin, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, Mick Jagger, Leonard Bernstein, Bjork, Cleo Laine, Stan Getz, Mike Stern… to name just a few!

As you can see we have pulled out all the stops with the best of Ireland north and south, Europe, UK and USA.

Summer School Fees:
€300 if paid before May 31 2011. Depending on the number of bookings we receive the price may increase after that date. This includes all summer school activities and admission to all festival concerts – including the Yellowjackets at the Hawks Well Theatre on July 20!
