Training in Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine with special topics on "Sleep and Memory"

Aims and Scope
The training course will also be part of the Programme of Neuroscience European Schools (PENS) and will have special topics on “Sleep and Memory”. The training course will be held in Bertinoro, Italy, at the Residential Centre of the University of Bologna (www.ceub.it), from May 8th to May 13th 2009. Participants will meet at the residence in the evening of Thursday, May 7th and will leave after lunch on Wednesday, May 13th. Free transfer to and from either Bologna or Forlì airport or railway station will be provided for all the participants on the afternoon of May 7th and on the afternoon of May 13th 2009. The course consists of a series of lectures and interactive sessions that should facilitate informal contacts among the participants and between the participants and leading European experts in the field.
The goal of the program is to provide young trainees from different European countries with both a theoretical and practical education in general aspects of sleep research/medicine and with the opportunity to gain experience from reciprocal interaction with top-level senior researchers.

Registration and Stipends
The participation fee will be fully reimbursed. An allowance will be given which fully covers living expenses (shared double room and meals) and covers travel expenses up to 320 Euro (up to 250 Euro if the distance is less than 500 Km).

What is Sleep?; Sleep regulation; The memory function of sleep; Physiological regulation in sleep; Sleep mechanisms: hypothalamus-basal forebrain; Sleep mechanisms: brain stem; Sleep genetics; Sleep and the immune system; The neurobiology of REM sleep behavior disorder; Functions of sleep and consequences of sleep loss; Sleep and breathing: a pathophysiological assessment; Motor disturbances in sleep: a genetic approach; Human circadian timing system; Slow wave oscillations and synaptic plasticity; Sleep and neurogenesis; Sleep and fMRI; Sleep and cognitive functions; Sleep spindles and memory; Imaging memory; Sleep in patients with memory deficits.

Complementary skills, including “career development” and “How to communicate with media in an interview” will be also addressed. Furthermore, special sessions devoted to “working in groups” will be held.

A special session “Communicating about science” will be organised, in which each participant will be asked to make a brief oral presentation (3 min) aimed to spread information amongst a general audience about the social and scientific relevance of his/her own work in scientific research.
