Musical Theatre Summer School

Running since 2003 the Guernsey International Dance and Musical Theatre Summer School, organised by the Avril Earl Dance and Theatre Arts Centre, is a chance to learn musical theatre skills from industry professionals.

The courses are overseen by our Musical Supervisor, Paul Monaghan, who also teaches the singing classes.

Paul is a true West End professional having starred in some of the best known shows of all time - Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera and Martin Guerre to name but three.

Paul is by no means alone for the week. Each year we bring over other professionals to teach theatre acting skills, musical theatre dance and commercial dance.

Past tutors for the course have included cast members from Mamma Mia, Wicked, Fosse, Chicago and Hairspray to name but a few. Our past commercial dance teachers have performed with some of the biggest names in music including, Kylie, Girls Aloud and Take That.

Each pupil takes part in daily classes in acting, singing, musical theatre dance and commercial dance. Many of the students also attend additional, optional, classes in ballet and tap.

The week culminates in a showcase concert for friends and family. This consists of the commercial, ballet and tap routines, which is followed by the premiere of the years Film and Television Acting course short film. The concert ends with a performance from that years chosen musical. Past themes have included Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Joseph, Hairspray, and Les Miserables.

The week is open to pupils from The Centre, but places are also available for other Guernsey and overseas students.

Visiting students will be expected to organise their own travel and accomodation, however The Centre would be happy to help advice on possible travel and accomodation options.
