Short Description
This course will be held from July 11 to July 15, 2011.
In this course you will get a profound insight into the basics and fundamentals of GIS. Furthermore you will extend your knowledge about GIS in general and especially in the field of water resources management.
The course content will be communicated by lectures, practical training and excursions with main focus on practical applications and hands-on exercises.
You will work with up-to-date GIS software and hardware, get professional assistance and receive comprehensive course materials. Additionally you will have the possibility to talk to GIS professionals during the excursions.
Course Objectives
The following topics will be covered:
Principles of Geographic Information Systems
GIS data structures & data sources
Map projections, coordinate systems, scale
Creating new geographic data - Geo-coding, digitizing & editing
Analyzing geographic data - spatial analysis, geostatistics, 3D-analysis
Cartographic presentation techniques - layout & design
GIS for Watershed Management
GIS for Urban Drainage
GIS for Urban Water Supply
Data Models
Special GIS tools: linear referencing, network analyst
Model integration
Company Visits / Excursions
Excursion 1: One of the Water Agencies of North Rhine-Westphalia (to be confirmed)
Excursion 2: STEB – Urban Drainage Company of the City Cologne (to be confirmed)
Tuition Fee
€ 600
including course documentation and catering,
