Contemporary Music Culture
The history of popular music in Berlin and Germany from the 1950s up to the present is the topic of this course.
Description
The history of popular music in Berlin and Germany from the 1950s up to the present is the topic of this course. This includes not only imitations of Anglo-American sounds in the 1950s (Rock’n’Roll) or in the 1960s (Beat) but also genres which were partially cut off from the Blues roots of the popular music of those decades (e. g. the so called “Krautrock” which emerged around 1970 and certain styles of Electronic Dance Music in the 1990s) as well as musical styles which adapted African-American (e.g. German Hip Hop) or even Jamaican sounds (German Reggae). By examining texts from popular music studies and cultural theory and by listening to significant sound examples analytically the course gives an historical overview of popular music in Germany and conveys a methodological competence in the historiography of popular music in general.
