DEADLINES 3 & 24 June - The Science of Medicine International Summer School, 18 July - 5 August 2011, Newcastle
The Science of Medicine
Programme runs: Monday 18 July to Saturday 5 August 2011
Facilitated by the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University
Programme outline
Are you intrigued by how the human body works and what can go wrong with it? Would you like to know more about how advances in medical sciences are helping us treat and prevent disease? Then this could be the programme for you. This course will introduce you to some of the science that underpins our understanding of disease. Newcastle University is renowned globally for the quality of its medical research and education. This course aims to give you a taste of medical science here at Newcastle University by focussing on selected topics of interest.
Each week of the course will focus on a theme:
- Genetics and human disease: how does your genetic makeup determine your susceptibility to disease and how you might respond to treatment? Has our knowledge of the human genome significantly affected health care to date? Is personalized medicine based on knowledge of a patient’s genome a realistic possibility?
- Pharmacology and human disease: how do some of the commonly used drugs work? Why can some drugs be taken by mouth but others have to be injected? Where do drugs come from, how are new drugs developed and how do we know that a drug will be effective and safe?
- Physiology and human disease: What does the kidney do? How does the structure of the kidney relate to how it works? Why is the kidney so important in maintaining human health? What happens when the kidney goes wrong such as in diabetes or kidney stones?
From beginners to experts, everyone will find something to challenge them at the Newcastle Summer School. The innovative curriculum combines lectures, practical hands-on exercises and interactive discussions based within Newcastle University Medical School. Preparation and assessment Students will be given advance notice of all pre-programme reading material. Depending on individual credit transfer needs, students will be assessed by a mix of on-going and final stage assessment. At the end of the summer school, students will be awarded a certificate stating the programme studied and their grade. Who should attend: The Newcastle Science of Medicine experience is open to everyone, so you do not require any formal qualifications.
