Creative Writing: North of Where?
Programme runs: Monday 18 July to Saturday 5 August 2011
Facilitated by the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics
Programme outline
Develop your creativity in themed workshops with experienced tutors. Whether your interest is in poetry, fiction or script, you will receive inspirational workshops designed to increase the fluency of your writing, develop your technical skills, and focus your reading. The theme North of Where?' will connect you to the vibrant culture and history of Newcastle and the surrounding region. It will also provide a template to explore your own sense of place and identity.
This course will include
- Daily workshops mixing innovative exercises with guided discussion of your writing
- Space and time to write by yourself, or discuss work and exchange ideas with a community of other writers
- Trips to key literary sites including the Wordsworth Trust at Grasmere, the Seven Stories Centre for the Children's Book in Newcastle , and the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh
- Visits to key cultural sites in Newcastle and the region including music at the Sage, theatre at Live and contemporary art at the BALTIC
Preparation and assessment
Students will be given advance notice of all pre-programme reading material.
Depending on individual credit transfer needs (credit is subject to full University approval), students will be assessed by a mix of on-going and final stage assessment. At the end of the summer school students will be awarded a certificate stating the programme studied and their grade.
