Who We Are
Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education (IIE) is a private nonprofit leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. In collaboration with governments, foundations and other sponsors, IIE creates programs of study and training for students, educators and professionals from all sectors. These programs include the flagship Fulbright Program and Gilman Scholarships administered for the U.S. Department of State. IIE also conducts policy research, provides resources on international exchange opportunities and offers support to scholars in danger.
What We Do
IIE administers over 200 programs serving more than 20,000 individuals each year. IIE provides a wide range of services to and manages or administers programs for many corporations, foundations, government partners, and international agencies.
- Fellowship And Scholarship Management
By implementing of some of the world’s most prestigious and innovative scholarship programs in a fair, open, and transparent manner, the Institute provides talent from around the world with access to leading institutions of higher education and the international experience that is critical to success in the 21st century workplace. These programs are vital to promoting mutual understanding, and developing global leaders.
- Global Leadership Development
Building leadership skills and enhancing the capacity of individuals and organizations to address local and global challenges constitute a vital part of the Institute of International Education’s mission. The long- and short-term training programs implemented by the Institute connect students and professionals with peers and colleagues around the world, to gain the skills and international perspectives they will need to forge solutions to global challenges.
- Higher Education Institutional Development
IIE works closely with public and private higher education institutions to develop high-quality academic programs in cooperation with governmental, nongovernmental organizations, and corporations. Leveraging extensive networks and expertise within the higher education community worldwide, IIE is uniquely positioned to help shape new universities and expand the capabilities and partnerships of existing academic institutions.
- Emergency Assistance for Scholars and Students
IIE has a long history of providing emergency assistance to scholars and students in danger around the world. Through the Scholar Rescue Fund, the Emergency Student Fund, and other efforts, IIE provides support and safe haven to persecuted scholars and students facing emergencies and crises, such as illness or natural disasters.
- International Education Services
IIE provides strategic resources and services to help faculty and administrators internationalize their campuses.
- International Development
The Institute partners with governments, international development agencies, foundations, universities and corporations, leveraging its international networks to collaborate on sustainable solutions for long-term development. IIE is committed to working with local communities in developing countries to advance education and economic development through training and scholarship initiatives, to prepare emerging leaders in the public and private sector with workforce development skills and leadership training, and to build the capacity of NGOs and civil society organizations to achieve their goals, advancing economic and social development in their communities.
