Intermodality and Externalities in Transportation Policy and Planning
June 1–June 6, 2009
The Helsinki Summer School in Transportation offers an intensive educational program to students and professionals of transport engineering and planning. Following the very successful Summer Schools on urban transport in 2007 and on statewide and intercity transport in 2008, the 2009 Summer School theme is intermodality and externalities in transportation policy and planning. The Summer School takes place in the first week of June 2009 at the campus of the Helsinki University of Technology, TKK.
The program, offered by renowned international experts, deals with the most important contemporary issues in transportation: intermodality and the externalities, and how they are addressed in decision-making, planning and in administering and managing transport systems. The course uses experiential learning concept, where interactive sessions, conducted by a subject matter expert, bring in and update the experience and knowledge of the participants. The six day course has themes by day: Externalities, Economics and Equity; Planning Responses to Externalities and Intermodal Issues; Logistics; Health, Safety, and Work Environment (this day is joint with the Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health); and Institutional Restructuring to cope with Intermodal, Legal, and Air Quality issues.
Expected Audience, Registration Fee and Credits
The Summer School is intended for transportation professionals, managers in transport entities, transport planners, transport operators, traffic engineers, citizen advocates, educators, and graduate students. Expected class size is 40 participants; in the past 85 percent of the class has been international.
The registration fee of EUR 400 includes course material. After 1st of April, 2009 the fee is EUR 600. The attendees earn continuation education credits in Helsinki University of Technology. Scholarships for students are available.
