HELSINKI SUMMER SCHOOL - thinking allowed
4-20 August 2009


Helsinki Summer School is a three-week academic event organised every August by the nine universities in the Helsinki area. Each year we give advanced degree students from over 60 countries an unforgettable experience that combines high quality academics with a wide range of cultural and social activities. Our multidisciplinary courses, all of which are taught in English, aim at stimulating thought and intellectual development in an open and diverse environment. At Helsinki Summer School, the rich academic, cultural and social resources of this vibrant city all become part of the classroom experience.

2009 Courses
-Ancient Gnosticism
This course is designed for BA and MA students with some prior knowledge of history of religion, theology, Biblical studies, Early Christian studies, or Classical studies.
-Developing Intercultural Competence
This course is designed to provide a multicultural and multidisciplinary group of Finnish and international students from various academic backgrounds with tools for understanding intercultural relationships.
-European Studies: Borders and Identities in Europe
The course is designed for Master's degree students, with a degree or strong basic knowledge and interest in European studies, political science, international relations, and modern European history.
-Introduction to Conceptual History
Finnish and international PhD and advanced Master’s degree students from various academic fields. Interest in the humanities and/or political thought is an asset.
-Representations of the City
This course is designed for students of sociology, geography, cultural studies, architecture, urban planning, environmental studies, politics or economics.
-Russia-EU Relations: Prospects and Dynamics
This course is designed for the Bachelor’s and Master’s level students.
-Semiotics and Poetics of Avant-Garde Literatures
This course is intended for Bachelor's and Master's level students from various academic fields.
-Video in Research on Learning and Education
This course is primarily for graduate and postgraduate students (i.e. the Master’s and PhD level).

Payments
International Students
* Registration fee 100 €/150 € (until 31 May / after 31 May)
* Course fee 300 €
* Accommodation 455 €/495 € (Eurohostel) or 300 € (flats in Pihlajamäki)

Registration fee
The registration fee is 150 € additional fees for international students. Payment is due within seven days of receipt of written notification of your acceptance to Helsinki Summer School. If you register before 31 May 2009, you will receive a 50 € discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for degree or exchange students attending Finnish universities is 50 €.

Course fee
The course fee of 300 € is to be paid upon your arrival in Helsinki. The course fee can also be paid in advance by bank transfer or credit card. Degree and exchange students attending universities in the Helsinki area are exempt from the course fee. Degree and exchange students attending other Finnish universities are required to pay one half of the course fee (150 €).

APPLICATION AND REGISTRATION
The application deadline is July 24, 2009. We do, however, advise that you submit your application as early as possible, as students are selected on a first come, first served basis.
