Volunteering & Internships at National History Museum, UK
About 1,400 people, including 300 scientists and over 400 volunteers, work for the Museum in a variety of roles. Do you have the skills and enthusiasm to join us?
The Natural History Museum needs bright, talented people with diverse skills and experience to continue being a world-class scientific institution and one of the most popular visitor attractions in the UK.
Volunteering
Our volunteers work front-of-house with the Learning Volunteers team and behind-the-scenes in the Behind the Seen volunteers team. We offer a small number of Internships.
All our volunteer opportunities are advertised online and you can apply for any suitable vacancies using our online recruitment website.
Volunteering and internships are for adults aged 18 or over. Our volunteer opportunities are usually based on 1 day per week for a minimum of 4 months
Volunteering is designed to be mutually beneficial to both the volunteer and the Museum. We aim to provide rewarding and enriching experiences for those taking part. Relevant training opportunities are outlined in each volunteer project or opportunity and all necessary role-related training will be provided at the Museum.
We recognise the significant contribution made by Museum volunteers and interns and we have an enrichment programme that involves training and social events too.
Internships
If you are interested in a short-term volunteer project at the Museum to help boost your career, an internship might be the best option. We offer a few internships every year usually in our non-science departments. We may expand this scheme to include some science department opportunities in the future.
Our interns are included in our overall Behind the Seen volunteer programme, but their roles are more career-focussed and are usually for a shorter period. The internship scheme has now replaced our previous work placements programme.
These are the non-science departments that support internships at present:
- Press Office
- Marketing Department
- Exhibition Interpretation and Design
